Government says it is putting an end to land barons who have been fingered in the illegal structures dotted across the country, a Cabinet Minister has revealed.
This was said by Minister of National Housing and Social Amenities Daniel Garwe at a meeting he had with representatives from Harare City Council and council representatives from its dormitory towns such as Ruwa, Epworth and Chitungwiza, on the Harare Metropolitan Province on the National Housing Delivery Programme vision 2030.
“We are putting a stop to land barons. We walk, the talk and we are coming to work with you councils to sanitise Harare. We apologise to citizens who have been ripped off by land barons. It is not acceptable what the land barons are doing,” Minister Garwe said.
“Let’s bring the Sunshine City back. How can it be a Sunshine City with open wells and pit latrines? We are going to be brutal on land barons. We are going to reclaim wetlands and land reserved for social amenities.”
Responding to a question on whether or not land barons are linked to any political party, Minister Garwe emphasised that the known land barons are not linked to the ZANU PF party but are individuals.
He said there are private developers who were invited by Government and given offers and in turn personalised them.
He singled out the former Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Ignatius Chombo as one of the land barons who had ripping off people of their hard earned monies and parcelling out land illegally.
Minister Garwe went on to say that as the New Dispensation, it is for correcting the wrongs which was done by the Old Dispensation.
Speaking at the same event Minister of State for Harare Provincial Affairs and Devolution Honourable Senator Engineer Oliver Chidawu reiterated Minister Garwe’s sentiments that corrupt land barons are responsible for the illegal structures highlighting that he would do everything in his power to deal with these illegal land barons.
