Net closing in on Machete gangs

HOME Affairs Minister Kazembe Kazembe has reiterated that the police force will not tolerate acts of violence by artisanal miners in any part of the country as Zimbabwe is a peaceful country.Addressing a gathering soon after a clean-up campaign in Mazowe, Cde Kazembe said the net was closing in on the so called “Machete gangs”, as police will not hesitate to arrest all perpetrators of violence in mining centres.“Those who are perpetrating violence be warned, the net is closing in on you, we want productivity as pronounced by our President, those who are there to destabilise peace, very sorry, not in this country any more, this is a peaceful country and we must respect that,” said Cde Kazembe.Police have since arrested three suspects, recovered a suspected murder weapon and the getaway car reportedly used by members of a gang that killed a police officer, two weeks ago, at Good Hope Mine in Battlefields.A machete allegedly used during the assault and an unregistered Honda Fit used as a gateway car were recovered following the arrest of Lyton Panashe Tshuma (18), Obvious Mawire (21) and Munyaradzi Chari (43).Following the incident, police rounded up 100 illegal gold panners and vendors in separate raids at Good Hope Mine and Jumbo Mine in Mazowe, both epicentres of recent serious violence.Meanwhile the Minister of State for Mashonaland Central, Cde Monica Mavhunga, called for unity in the country.“We call for unity in the mining sectors, those who are giving names to the machete gangs, they want to divide us, let’s not allow these divisive elements among us, lets unite and stop the use of machetes,” she added.
