PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa is expected to officiate at the 2019 National Young Champion Farmer Awards ceremony set for the capital tomorrow.
The event is part of efforts to lure young people into agriculture and demonstrate to the “doubting Thomases” that the sector is lucrative.
President Mnangagwa has on several occasions challenged youths to take an active role in agriculture as his government will give them priority in the allocation of land.
To date the government has directed that provincial ministers allocate 10 hectares of land per district to be used by youths.
The ministry of Agriculture through its Youth desk has also managed to correct the poor branding of agriculture and correcting the perception of agriculture as an unattractive career option for the youth.
The Youth desk is running a farmer branding programme designed to lure young farmers into the agriculture sector.
Under the branding programme, information of successful youth farmers is published through various platforms that include print and online media.
Other platforms will include distribution of brochures at major exhibition events such as the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) and Harare Agricultural Show (HAS).
The thrust to lure investment in agriculture was premised on the fact that Zimbabwe is an agro based nation and young people are beginning to show appetite to venture into the sector.
Youth in Zimbabwe account for 60 percent of the population and the agricultural sector presents a huge opportunity for creation of employment to absorb the youth and ensure achievement of food security for future generations.
