According to Our World in Data which collated data on the share of people vaccinated against Covid19 as at 24 July 2021, Zimbabwe is leading the perk among of African countries.
Our World in Data is a scientific online publication which specialises in research and data analytics on progress against the world’s largest problems.
Their collated data highlights that the vaccination data is only available for countries which report the breakdown of doses administered by first and second doses and has a data compilation from 27 December 2020 to 24 July 2021. The compilation shows the share of people fully vaccinated against Covid19 and Share of people partly vaccinated against Covid19 in the different countries.
Canada is topping the list with 70%, followed by the UK with close to 70%, Spain around 65%, Italy just over 60%, Germany at 60%, France just below 60%, USA just over 55%, Saudia Arabia just below 55% and Several others and Zimbabwe at number 27 with almost 9%. Countries that come after Zimbabwe are South Africa tailing so close to Zimbabwe with about 8%, Ukraine and Iran at about 7%, Vietnam, Bangladesh and Egypt all close to 5% and Ghana, Kenya, Iraq, Sudan, Nigeria, Mozambique all below 5% respectively.
Zimbabwe has been fighting to reach herd immunity in its fight against the Covid19 pandemic.
In February Zimbabwe received its first batch of vaccines from China of about 200 000 doses of Sinopharm, another batch of 1million Sinovac vaccines was received in March. India and Russia also donated Covaxin and Sputnik vaccines respectively.
Zimbabwe has also started purchasing the vaccines with its first batch of 500 000 vaccines having arrived in June and another batch 1million having arrived recently.
Writing on his twitter handle, Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Honourable Mthuli Ncube highlighted how the country is expecting more vaccines.
“Walking the talk. Zimbabwe today received an additional 1million doses of WHO approved Sinovac Covid19 vaccines. We expect to receive an additional 1.5 million vaccines later this week.
“To date, Zimbabwe has received over 5million vaccine doses. Saving lives and livelihoods vaccination program is part of Zimbabwe’s economic recovery strategy. Zvakarongeka,” said Minister Ncube.
