High rise concept steadily making progress

By Staff Writer

The high rise building concept seems to be making significant progress in Zimbabwe with Government taking advantage of this concept in its building policy.

High-rise building means a multi-story structure that exceeds a certain height, typically around seven stories or higher, where occupants rely on elevators for vertical transportation.

Many countries have been building upwards not only to save space but because there is basically no more building space especially in places where environmental laws are strictly adhered to.

In other countries, homeowners, developers and landlords can build upward extensions and add two storeys for housing to their buildings without needing a planning permission in what can be referred to as upwards extension permitted development rights.

Speaking during the Cabinet meeting this Tuesday, Minister of National Housing and Social Amenities highlighted the achievements below.

Under the Housing Delivery Thematic Area of the National Development

Strategy 1:

i. Construction of 64 units of 4x4 storey blocks of flats under the Marondera Flats Housing Project in Mashonaland East Province is 90% complete;

ii. Construction of 2 blocks of garden flats and 2 blocks of doublestorey duplex flats under the Beitbridge Re-development project in Matabeleland South Province is 71% complete; and

iii. Construction of 4x4 storey blocks of flats under the Zambezi Flats project in Harare Metropolitan Province has commenced in

earnest.
